The 2026 Draft Plan for Roster Builders, Not Pickers

The mistake most drafters make is treating each pick as isolated: best available, move on. The board rewards the opposite. Your Round 6 pick is only good if it fills a hole your first five didn't, and the last real value in Round 11 only matters if you left the door open for it. Draft your roster shape first and let the names fall into it.

Rounds 1-2: Take the RB Runs

The top of the board is running back on purpose. Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson share a 1.02 ADP, and by the 1.07 turn you already lose Christian McCaffrey and Jonathan Taylor. If you pick late in Round 1, De'Von Achane at 1.10 is the last back before a receiver wall of Lamb and Jefferson.

Round 2 is where the position thins fast. James Cook and Chase Brown both go 2.01, Ashton Jeanty and Derrick Henry are gone by 2.06, and Kenneth Walker and Omarion Hampton close the round at 2.10 and 2.11. If you opened with a receiver, you cannot skip this run. Two backs through two rounds is the safest foundation the board offers.

This is the round to load receiver if you went RB-RB. Malik Nabers at 3.03, DeVonta Smith at 3.06, Tetairoa McMillan at 3.09 and Emeka Egbuka at 3.11 all sit in a tier that thins out by Round 5. Trey McBride (3.05) and Brock Bowers (3.11) also live here if you want to lock the tight end position before it collapses.

If you don't own two of the top four backs by the end of Round 2, spend Rounds 3 and 4 correcting it before the position dries up.

Rounds 4-6: The Mid-Round Backfield Fight

The middle rounds are where the RB dead zone starts and every drafter feels it. Cam Skattebo and Javonte Williams share 4.01, Travis Etienne goes 4.04, and after Bucky Irving (4.09) and D'Andre Swift (4.10) the position gets murky. This is why banking backs early matters: it lets you take the falling receivers here instead of reaching for a committee back.

The receiver value in this stretch is real. Jaylen Waddle at 4.10, DJ Moore at 5.01, and Rome Odunze at 5.04 are startable weekly. In Round 6 the depth-chart risers show up: Marvin Harrison Jr. at 6.06 and Brian Thomas Jr. at 6.12 are ceiling swings priced like flex pieces.

Rounds 7-9: Fill the Roster, Grab a QB

If you waited on quarterback, this is your window. Jalen Hurts falls to 7.07, Caleb Williams to 8.06, and Trevor Lawrence to 8.08 — all weekly QB1 outcomes at a Round 8 cost. Pair one with backfield lottery tickets like RJ Harvey (8.03) and J.K. Dobbins (8.07), who carry standalone value if the depth chart tilts their way.

Rounds 10-12: Where the Last Value Sits

The final rounds are for upside, not floor. Jacory Croskey-Merritt at 10.09 and Jordan Mason at 10.10 are backfield stashes one snap from relevance. The receiver room churn shows up here too: Jordyn Tyson at 11.07 and Jayden Higgins at 11.09 are the exact names sliding on the board that carry paths to real snaps.

Don't burn these picks on a second defense or a kicker you'll stream anyway. Every Round 11 and 12 slot should be a player with a route to a starting role by Week 4, because that is where leagues are actually won.

The plan is simple to state and hard to execute: secure the backfield through Round 2, bank receiver value in Rounds 3 through 6, take your quarterback when it falls in Rounds 7 or 8, and spend the last three rounds exclusively on upside. Draft the roster, not the names, and the board does the rest.
